- 03
Convert and download

Built for privacy and speed
Nothing leaves your device
Your browser reads and converts the file. No server receives it and no copy is kept.
No queue
With no upload step, an image or a spreadsheet converts in seconds.
Batch conversion
Add dozens of files, apply one format to all of them and get everything in a single ZIP.
The real format, detected
Formatomat reads each file’s binary signature. A PNG image named .jpg is handled as a PNG.
Useful settings
JPG quality, width in pixels, PDF page resolution, MP3 bitrate, CSV separator for Excel.
Desktop and mobile
Nothing to install: the page is designed for recent versions of Chrome, Edge, Firefox and Safari, on computers and phones.
Supported formats

Frequently asked questions
Are my files uploaded to a server?
No. Conversion happens entirely in your browser, on your device. Every conversion module is hosted on formatomat.com: none is loaded from another site. Your files are not sent anywhere.
Is there a size limit?
A file’s size has no fixed limit: it depends on your device’s memory and on the browser. A few hundred MB work well on a recent computer. On a phone, stick to lighter files, especially for video. Most conversions read the whole file: beyond a certain size, often about 2 GB (less on a phone), the browser cannot read it in one block, and a message gives the file’s size.
A few caps still protect the browser’s memory, including: 1 GB of unpacked data for an archive or a Word, Excel, OpenDocument or EPUB file (512 MB on a phone and on some devices with little memory), 20,000 files per archive, 5 million filled cells per workbook, and 500 pages for a TIFF converted to PDF. A file over a cap is not converted, and a message says so.
Why does the layout change when I convert a PDF to Word?
A PDF mostly describes where letters sit on the page. Formatomat extracts the text, headings, lists, tables, pictures, links and footnotes to build an editable document, and reads text in columns one column at a time. Each page of the PDF starts a new page in the Word document, but the original fonts and the exact layout are not rebuilt.
Which browsers work?
The page is designed for recent versions of Chrome, Edge, Firefox and Safari. Video conversion (MP4, WEBM, MOV, MKV) uses WebCodecs, a feature of Chrome and Edge and of recent versions of Safari and Firefox (except Firefox for Android, which does not have it yet). A conversion the browser cannot do is refused with a message that says so.
Can I convert several files at once?
Yes. Add as many files as you like, pick a format for each one or use “Convert all to”, then download the results one by one or in a single ZIP archive.
Is it free?
Yes, with no sign-up and no watermark. Since the work happens on your device, there is no quota and no waiting time.
