PDF to EPUB: what to know

Reading a PDF on an e-reader or a phone means zooming and scrolling around A4 pages. Formatomat extracts the text, rebuilds the paragraphs, rejoins words hyphenated at line ends, keeps headers and footers that are identical on every page only once and removes page numbers that run in sequence from page to page. It produces an EPUB 3 with a table of contents, plus an NCX index for older e-readers. The PDF’s images are carried over; the book has no cover.

The book title is the one the PDF states in its properties; failing that, or when it is only an automatic title such as “Microsoft Word - report.docx”, it is the file name, so rename the PDF before converting, for example “Pride and Prejudice.pdf”, to see it properly in your library. The simpler the PDF, the better the result: a novel, report, dissertation or course notes. For a comic, a heavily illustrated magazine or a scanned document, reflowable text makes little sense, so keep the PDF or convert its pages to images.

PDF vs EPUB: what’s the difference?

PDFPortable Document Format

A document format created by Adobe in 1993 and now an ISO standard. The layout looks the same on every device, which makes it the reference format for sharing, signing and printing.

EPUBElectronic Publication

The standard ebook format. Text reflows to fit the screen, and it reads on most e-readers and reading apps.

PDF to EPUB: frequently asked questions

Why does my EPUB have only one chapter?

Chapters are created from headings, which are detected by their font size: a new chapter starts at every heading of the largest level found. If the document title, in very large type, is the only one at that level, the whole book ends up in one chapter. The same happens when the PDF’s headings are the same size as the body text.

Will the EPUB open on a Kobo, a Kindle or Apple Books?

Kobo readers, most other e-readers and apps such as Apple Books or Google Play Books open EPUB directly. For a Kindle, send the file with Amazon’s Send to Kindle service, which accepts EPUB and adds the book to your library.

Are my PDF files uploaded to the internet?

No. The file is read and converted by your browser, on your device. Nothing is sent to a server, and nothing is kept after you close the page.

Does converting PDF to EPUB reduce quality?

The text is carried over, but not the exact layout: headings, paragraphs, lists, tables, bold, italics, images and form values are rebuilt, and text in columns is read one column at a time. Drawn charts and diagrams become pictures. The original fonts are not reproduced, a table without rules that has merged cells may not be rebuilt, and a scanned page is inserted as a picture, without text recognition (OCR). A check then compares the words carried over with those of the PDF (not the pictures nor the layout): if it finds a passage missing, a message quotes it.

How many PDF files can I convert?

As many as you like, for free and without signing up. Add them all, then download the results one by one or in a single ZIP. The maximum size depends on your device and browser, with a few caps that protect its memory (for example 20,000 files per archive or 5 million filled cells per workbook: see the home page FAQ); a file over one of them is not converted, and a message says so.

Does it work on iPhone and Android?

Formatomat is designed for recent browsers on computers, iPhone and Android, with no app to install. A conversion the browser cannot do (a format it cannot read or write) is refused with a message that says so.
