SVG to JPG: what to know

JPG is useful when an SVG has to go into a document or onto a platform that only accepts that format: online forms, print services, older office software. The SVG’s transparent background is replaced with white, and the soft edges of shapes blend into that white. For a logo meant for a coloured background, PNG is therefore still the better choice.

JPG suits illustrations rich in gradients. For a logo in flat colours, raise the quality towards 100%: compression can leave slight smudges along crisp edges where the SVG was perfectly clean. Keep the original SVG too: the JPG is just a picture, with no selectable text or editable shapes, and it cannot be enlarged without blurring.

SVG vs JPG: what’s the difference?

SVGScalable Vector Graphics

A vector image format written in XML. An SVG stays sharp at any size, so it is used for logos, icons and web illustrations.

JPGJPEG (Joint Photographic Experts Group)

The most widely used photo format, introduced in 1992. Its lossy compression keeps files small, and it opens everywhere: phones, computers and social networks. It does not support transparency.

SVG to JPG: frequently asked questions

Why does my white logo disappear when converted to JPG?

Because JPG has no transparency: the SVG’s transparent background turns white, and a white logo designed for a dark background ends up white on white. Convert it to PNG instead, which keeps the transparency, or add a background rectangle in the colour you want to the SVG before converting.

Why is my SVG file rejected by the converter?

The file must be a valid SVG, written in XML. A badly closed tag or an unescaped special character is enough to make it unreadable, so export it again from your drawing app. A compressed SVG (.svgz), as Inkscape can save, is read like a regular SVG.

Are my SVG files uploaded to the internet?

No. The file is read and converted by your browser, on your device. Nothing is sent to a server, and nothing is kept after you close the page.

Does converting SVG to JPG reduce quality?

JPG uses lossy compression, but at the default setting (90% quality) the difference is invisible to the naked eye. You can go up to 100% in the settings.

How many SVG files can I convert?

As many as you like, for free and without signing up. Add them all, then download the results one by one or in a single ZIP. The maximum size depends on your device and browser, with a few caps that protect its memory (for example 20,000 files per archive or 5 million filled cells per workbook: see the home page FAQ); a file over one of them is not converted, and a message says so.

Does it work on iPhone and Android?

Formatomat is designed for recent browsers on computers, iPhone and Android, with no app to install. A conversion the browser cannot do (a format it cannot read or write) is refused with a message that says so.
