HEIC to PNG: what to know

PNG makes sense for a HEIC photo you will edit in several stages, or for a layout app that refuses HEIC: being lossless, it stops each new save from degrading the image. It cannot bring back what HEIC compression has already discarded, though; it simply freezes the photo exactly as it is decoded, detail for detail.

The catch is size: a 12-megapixel photo often goes over 10 MB as PNG, against a few MB as HEIC. If you do not need the full resolution, enter a width in the settings, 2,000 px for example, to get a far more manageable file. The EXIF metadata (date, camera, GPS location) is not carried over into the PNG.

HEIC vs PNG: what’s the difference?

HEICHigh Efficiency Image Container (HEIF)

The default photo format on iPhone since iOS 11 (2017). It can be half the size of a JPG of the same quality, but Windows, many websites and plenty of apps cannot open it.

A lossless image format introduced in 1996. It keeps every pixel and supports transparency, which makes it ideal for screenshots, logos and illustrations. Photos are larger in PNG than in JPG.

HEIC to PNG: frequently asked questions

Should I convert HEIC photos to PNG before editing them?

It helps if you will save the photo several times while editing, since PNG adds no loss on each save. For a quick touch-up or simple sharing, JPG is enough and much lighter. Either way, keep the original HEIC as your reference copy.

Will converting to PNG make the photo’s background transparent?

No. PNG supports transparency, but the conversion does not cut anything out: a photo taken on an iPhone is fully opaque, and so is the PNG. To isolate a subject you need a cut-out tool; on an iPhone, touch and hold the subject in the Photos app to copy it without its background.

Are my HEIC files uploaded to the internet?

No. The file is read and converted by your browser, on your device. Nothing is sent to a server, and nothing is kept after you close the page.

Does converting HEIC to PNG reduce quality?

No. PNG is lossless: the image is saved pixel for pixel, exactly as it is displayed.

How many HEIC files can I convert?

As many as you like, for free and without signing up. Add them all, then download the results one by one or in a single ZIP. The maximum size depends on your device and browser, with a few caps that protect its memory (for example 20,000 files per archive or 5 million filled cells per workbook: see the home page FAQ); a file over one of them is not converted, and a message says so.

Does it work on iPhone and Android?

Formatomat is designed for recent browsers on computers, iPhone and Android, with no app to install. A conversion the browser cannot do (a format it cannot read or write) is refused with a message that says so.
