WebP to JPG: what to know

Most WebP files arrive through the browser: an image saved from a website, an online shop or a search result. It displays everywhere on the web, but older software, photo printing services and online forms sometimes still refuse it. As a JPG, expect a file that is often larger than the WebP, for an image that looks the same.

The image was already compressed once as WebP, and converting it to JPG compresses it a second time. There is no point going up to 100%: the file grows a lot without bringing back lost detail. Likewise, a 300 px thumbnail enlarged with the width option will stay blurry, so it is better to find the full-size image on the original site.

WebP vs JPG: what’s the difference?

WEBPWebP

A format created by Google in 2010 to make the web lighter. It compresses with or without loss, supports transparency and animation, and files are often 25–35% smaller than a JPG of the same quality.

JPGJPEG (Joint Photographic Experts Group)

The most widely used photo format, introduced in 1992. Its lossy compression keeps files small, and it opens everywhere: phones, computers and social networks. It does not support transparency.

WebP to JPG: frequently asked questions

Why are images I save from websites in WebP format?

Many sites send WebP images to browsers that support them, because they load faster. When you save the image you get the file as it was received, hence the .webp extension. Converting it to JPG makes it usable in apps that cannot read WebP.

What happens to an animated or transparent WebP converted to JPG?

JPG supports neither animation nor transparency. An animated WebP becomes a single still image, and transparent areas turn white. To keep the transparency, convert the WebP to PNG instead.

Are my WebP files uploaded to the internet?

No. The file is read and converted by your browser, on your device. Nothing is sent to a server, and nothing is kept after you close the page.

Does converting WebP to JPG reduce quality?

JPG uses lossy compression, but at the default setting (90% quality) the difference is invisible to the naked eye. You can go up to 100% in the settings.

How many WebP files can I convert?

As many as you like, for free and without signing up. Add them all, then download the results one by one or in a single ZIP. The maximum size depends on your device and browser, with a few caps that protect its memory (for example 20,000 files per archive or 5 million filled cells per workbook: see the home page FAQ); a file over one of them is not converted, and a message says so.

Does it work on iPhone and Android?

Formatomat is designed for recent browsers on computers, iPhone and Android, with no app to install. A conversion the browser cannot do (a format it cannot read or write) is refused with a message that says so.
