PNG to PDF: what to know

Gathering screenshots into a PDF is handy for a tutorial, a bug report, a proof of purchase or a document you need to send. Text and interfaces stay as crisp as on screen, and each page follows the shape of its image: portrait for a phone screenshot, landscape for a computer one. A margin of about 1 cm surrounds each image.

Very long captures, such as a full-length web page, are scaled down to fit the sheet, and on A4 the text can end up tiny. Split them into several images, or choose “Image size” for a page as long as the capture. Finally, since every PNG is embedded losslessly, photos saved as PNG make a heavy PDF: convert them to JPG first.

PNG vs PDF: what’s the difference?

PNGPortable Network Graphics

A lossless image format introduced in 1996. It keeps every pixel and supports transparency, which makes it ideal for screenshots, logos and illustrations. Photos are larger in PNG than in JPG.

PDFPortable Document Format

A document format created by Adobe in 1993 and now an ISO standard. The layout looks the same on every device, which makes it the reference format for sharing, signing and printing.

PNG to PDF: frequently asked questions

What happens to the PNG’s transparent areas in the PDF?

They stay transparent in the PDF: nothing is drawn there, so you see the page, usually white on screen, and the paper when printed. A cut-out logo therefore appears on a white background, or on the colour of the paper if you print on a tinted sheet.

Why does my screenshot look small in the middle of the A4 page?

Formatomat never enlarges an image: it is placed at its own size, the one given by the resolution recorded in the file (144 pixels per inch for a Retina screenshot from a Mac, for example) or, failing that, 96 pixels per inch, and only scaled down if it exceeds the page. At 96 pixels per inch, an image less than about 700 px wide therefore does not fill the width of an A4 page. Choose “Image size” for a page that fits the capture.

Are my PNG files uploaded to the internet?

No. The file is read and converted by your browser, on your device. Nothing is sent to a server, and nothing is kept after you close the page.

Does converting PNG to PDF reduce quality?

No. The image is embedded in the PDF losslessly, transparency included.

How many PNG files can I convert?

As many as you like, for free and without signing up. Add them all, then download the results one by one or in a single ZIP. The maximum size depends on your device and browser, with a few caps that protect its memory (for example 20,000 files per archive or 5 million filled cells per workbook: see the home page FAQ); a file over one of them is not converted, and a message says so.

Does it work on iPhone and Android?

Formatomat is designed for recent browsers on computers, iPhone and Android, with no app to install. A conversion the browser cannot do (a format it cannot read or write) is refused with a message that says so.
