JPG to ICO: what to know

A JPG has no transparency, so the icon keeps its original background, often white, which shows up as an obvious square in a dark-mode tab or on a dark desktop. Before converting, also crop the image to a square, tight around the subject: with a rectangular image, the bands added on either side make the icon look smaller.

For a logo, start from its PNG or SVG version if you can, as it is often transparent and sharper than the JPG. Otherwise, cut out the JPG in an editing app, save it as PNG, then convert that PNG to ICO. The resulting file works as a favicon as well as an icon for a shortcut or a folder in Windows.

JPG vs ICO: what’s the difference?

JPGJPEG (Joint Photographic Experts Group)

The most widely used photo format, introduced in 1992. Its lossy compression keeps files small, and it opens everywhere: phones, computers and social networks. It does not support transparency.

JPG to ICO: frequently asked questions

Can a photo make a good favicon?

Rarely as it is. In a tab a favicon is shown at 16 or 32 px: a face or a single object, cropped very tightly, stays recognisable, but a landscape, a group photo or text does not. Simplify the image, boost the contrast and check how it looks at a small size before publishing.

How do I get a round icon from a JPG photo?

The ICO format is square: for a round look, everything outside the circle must be transparent, which JPG cannot do. Crop the photo into a circle in an editing app, save it as a PNG with a transparent background, then convert that PNG to ICO: the transparency will be kept.

Are my JPG files uploaded to the internet?

No. The file is read and converted by your browser, on your device. Nothing is sent to a server, and nothing is kept after you close the page.

Does converting JPG to ICO reduce quality?

The image is resized to the standard icon sizes (16, 24, 32 and 48 px, plus 64, 128 and 256 px when it is large enough), then saved losslessly. Start from an image of at least 256 px for a crisp icon.

How many JPG files can I convert?

As many as you like, for free and without signing up. Add them all, then download the results one by one or in a single ZIP. The maximum size depends on your device and browser, with a few caps that protect its memory (for example 20,000 files per archive or 5 million filled cells per workbook: see the home page FAQ); a file over one of them is not converted, and a message says so.

Does it work on iPhone and Android?

Formatomat is designed for recent browsers on computers, iPhone and Android, with no app to install. A conversion the browser cannot do (a format it cannot read or write) is refused with a message that says so.
