Converting a GIF to PNG is a way to freeze an animation into a still (a thumbnail, an illustration for a document) or to modernise an old logo, icon or piece of pixel art. The PNG reproduces the GIF’s colours exactly, transparency included, without adding anything: the original 256 colours and jagged edges stay as they are.
If the animation opens on a blank or black frame, as in a fade-in, that is the frame you will get. The PNG is also saved in full colour, without a palette, so it can end up larger than the GIF, especially for a big image. On the plus side it is ready for editing: you can add colours or soft transparency, which GIF did not allow.

A lossless image format introduced in 1996. It keeps every pixel and supports transparency, which makes it ideal for screenshots, logos and illustrations. Photos are larger in PNG than in JPG.
Formatomat only converts the first frame of the animation. To extract another one, open the GIF in an editing app that puts each frame on its own layer, keep the one you want and export it as PNG.
Yes, with the width option: enlarging smooths the pixels, which suits photos but blurs pixel art or a small icon. Instead, convert the GIF at its original size, then enlarge the PNG in an app that offers “nearest neighbour” scaling.
No. The file is read and converted by your browser, on your device. Nothing is sent to a server, and nothing is kept after you close the page.
No. PNG is lossless: the image is saved pixel for pixel, exactly as it is displayed.
As many as you like, for free and without signing up. Add them all, then download the results one by one or in a single ZIP. The maximum size depends on your device and browser, with a few caps that protect its memory (for example 20,000 files per archive or 5 million filled cells per workbook: see the home page FAQ); a file over one of them is not converted, and a message says so.
Formatomat is designed for recent browsers on computers, iPhone and Android, with no app to install. A conversion the browser cannot do (a format it cannot read or write) is refused with a message that says so.
