How to convert TAR.GZ to ZIP

  1. 01

    Add your TAR.GZ files

Click “Choose TAR.GZ files” or drop them on the page. You can add several at once.

  2. 02

    Check the ZIP format

ZIP is already selected. The archive’s files and folders are carried over; symbolic links, which are not copied, are listed.

  3. 03

    Convert and download

Click “Convert”, then download your ZIP file. With several files, grab everything at once as a ZIP.

TAR.GZ to ZIP: what to know

TAR.GZ files, also called .tgz, come from server and hosting backups, software source releases, datasets and npm packages. The conversion decompresses the archive in memory, up to 1 GB and 20,000 files (512 MB on a phone), then rewrites every file into a ZIP with its path, its folders, even empty ones, its modification date and its Unix permissions; a date before 1980, which ZIP cannot record, becomes the nearest possible one, and a message says so. Files that are already compressed, such as JPG, MP4 or ZIP, are stored as they are; the rest are compressed one by one.

The ZIP is often slightly larger than the TAR.GZ, which compresses all the files as a single block. Symbolic links are not copied, and a message names them; a file stored under two names (a hard link) is copied under each of them. An archive made with the tar command on a Mac may contain files starting with “._”: they are macOS metadata, useless on Windows, and you can delete them from the ZIP.

TAR.GZ vs ZIP: what’s the difference?

TAR.GZTAR + gzip

A TAR archive compressed with gzip, very common on Linux and for shipping code. Older versions of Windows open it less easily than a ZIP.

ZIPZIP

The most common archive format. It bundles and compresses several files into one and opens without extra software on Windows, macOS, Android and iPhone.

TAR.GZ to ZIP: frequently asked questions

Will my scripts still be executable after converting to ZIP?

Yes. The ZIP created here keeps the TAR.GZ’s Unix permissions, as the zip command does: once extracted on Linux or macOS, scripts stay executable and private files stay private. Windows File Explorer ignores these permissions, except read-only: a file without write permission stays read-only there.

Can I convert a .tar.bz2 or .tar.xz file to ZIP?

No, only plain TAR archives and gzip-compressed ones (.tar.gz or .tgz) are supported. The bzip2, xz and zstd variants show an unsupported format message. Decompress them first with an archive tool: if you end up with a .tar, add it here; if you get a folder, your system can compress it straight to ZIP.

Are my TAR.GZ files uploaded to the internet?

No. The file is read and converted by your browser, on your device. Nothing is sent to a server, and nothing is kept after you close the page.

Does converting TAR.GZ to ZIP reduce quality?

No. The files’ content does not change, nor do their Unix permissions (executable scripts, private files) when the original archive records them. Symbolic links are not copied, and the ones left out are listed. Extended attributes and ACLs recorded in a TAR archive are kept in a TAR archive; a ZIP cannot record them, and a message says so. File names in an old TAR archive that are not UTF-8 are read with the Western European encoding (Windows-1252), and a message lists them. Two identical names, or a file and a folder with the same name, are told apart with “(2)”, and a message gives the number of names changed and quotes up to six of them; names that differ only by letter case or by how their accents are encoded are kept as they are, and a message warns that Windows and macOS mix them up. A damaged or incomplete archive is refused rather than half converted.

How many TAR.GZ files can I convert?

As many as you like, for free and without signing up. Add them all, then download the results one by one or in a single ZIP. The maximum size depends on your device and browser, with a few caps that protect its memory (for example 20,000 files per archive or 5 million filled cells per workbook: see the home page FAQ); a file over one of them is not converted, and a message says so.

Does it work on iPhone and Android?

Formatomat is designed for recent browsers on computers, iPhone and Android, with no app to install. A conversion the browser cannot do (a format it cannot read or write) is refused with a message that says so.
