JPG to PNG: what to know

A PNG is often requested by design tools and print-on-demand platforms, and it makes a good working format for annotating a photo with text or arrows. The conversion copies the image pixel for pixel but leaves the JPG’s EXIF metadata behind: the camera model, the date and the GPS location do not come along.

For printing, the pixel count is what matters: an image 3,000 px wide gives about 25 cm at 300 dpi. The resolution stored in the JPG is carried over to the PNG (a reduced image keeps its size on paper). And the width option cannot invent detail: enlarging an 800 px photo to reach that threshold gives a bigger image, but a blurry one.

JPG vs PNG: what’s the difference?

JPGJPEG (Joint Photographic Experts Group)

The most widely used photo format, introduced in 1992. Its lossy compression keeps files small, and it opens everywhere: phones, computers and social networks. It does not support transparency.

PNGPortable Network Graphics

A lossless image format introduced in 1996. It keeps every pixel and supports transparency, which makes it ideal for screenshots, logos and illustrations. Photos are larger in PNG than in JPG.

JPG to PNG: frequently asked questions

Does converting a JPG to PNG make the background transparent?

No. PNG supports transparency, but the conversion removes nothing: the white or coloured background of a photo stays where it is, just saved in another format. To get a transparent background, cut out the subject in an editing app, then export the result as PNG.

Why is the PNG so much larger than my JPG?

JPG owes its small size to lossy compression; PNG stores every pixel exactly, and the grain of a photo compresses poorly without loss. A photo of a few megabytes can therefore go over 10 MB. To share the image, keep the JPG; to shrink the PNG, reduce its width.

Are my JPG files uploaded to the internet?

No. The file is read and converted by your browser, on your device. Nothing is sent to a server, and nothing is kept after you close the page.

Does converting JPG to PNG reduce quality?

No. PNG is lossless: the image is saved pixel for pixel, exactly as it is displayed.

How many JPG files can I convert?

As many as you like, for free and without signing up. Add them all, then download the results one by one or in a single ZIP. The maximum size depends on your device and browser, with a few caps that protect its memory (for example 20,000 files per archive or 5 million filled cells per workbook: see the home page FAQ); a file over one of them is not converted, and a message says so.

Does it work on iPhone and Android?

Formatomat is designed for recent browsers on computers, iPhone and Android, with no app to install. A conversion the browser cannot do (a format it cannot read or write) is refused with a message that says so.
