MOV to MP4: what to know

MOV files from iPhones and Mac screen recordings usually contain H.264 or HEVC video with AAC sound. MP4 accepts those codecs, so the picture is copied as it is, without re-encoding, and the sound too whenever possible. The conversion is therefore quick even for a large file, and the picture keeps exactly the same quality. The orientation of videos shot upright is preserved. If the sound is in a format this browser cannot convert, the video is refused with a message rather than delivered silent: to get the picture alone, choose “Without sound” in the file’s settings.

One notable exception: ProRes, offered on iPhone Pro models and used in editing, is usually not supported by browsers, so the conversion stops with a message. Export those videos as H.264 or HEVC first. And if HEVC causes trouble on an older PC, set your iPhone to Settings › Camera › Formats › Most Compatible: your next videos will be shot in H.264.

MOV vs MP4: what’s the difference?

MOVQuickTime Movie

Apple’s video format (QuickTime), used by the iPhone and many cameras. Windows, Android and some websites handle it less well than MP4.

MP4MPEG-4 Part 14

The most compatible video format, played by almost every phone, computer, TV and social network.

MOV to MP4: frequently asked questions

Why does my converted video show the wrong date in my photo gallery?

The MP4 is a new file: it records the conversion date as its creation date, and the GPS location or iPhone model stored in the MOV is not copied. A photo library may therefore file it under the wrong day. Keep the original MOV in your photos and use the MP4 only for sharing.

What does the 720p option do to a video shot upright?

It caps the shorter side of the picture: a 1080 × 1920 vertical video becomes 720 × 1280 at 720p, just as a 1920 × 1080 horizontal one becomes 1280 × 720. To keep the original resolution, leave it on “Original”. Any reduction means the picture is re-encoded, which takes far longer than a straight copy.

Are my MOV files uploaded to the internet?

No. The file is read and converted by your browser, on your device. Nothing is sent to a server, and nothing is kept after you close the page.

Does converting MOV to MP4 reduce quality?

When possible, the video is simply moved into the new container without re-encoding, so nothing is lost. Otherwise your browser re-encodes it at high quality.

How many MOV files can I convert?

As many as you like, for free and without signing up. Add them all, then download the results one by one or in a single ZIP. The maximum size depends on your device and browser, with a few caps that protect its memory (for example 20,000 files per archive or 5 million filled cells per workbook: see the home page FAQ); a file over one of them is not converted, and a message says so.

Does it work on iPhone and Android?

Video conversion uses WebCodecs, a feature of recent versions of Chrome, Edge, Safari and Firefox (except Firefox for Android, which does not have it yet); a video whose picture or sound the browser cannot read or write is refused with a message that says so. On a phone, stick to videos of a few minutes.
